Research has shown than 37 per cent of students in the UK use computers for at-home study on a daily basis, while just 30 per cent use them for in-class learning each day.
Commissioned by Microsoft, the study of 512 families with secondary school age children also revealed nine out of 10 used a home computer for study purposes at least once a week.
Microsoft’s Ray Fleming suggested that the higher use of computers in the home reflects the limitations of computer use in schools.
“School use of information technology can be very scheduled – it's often structured around particular lessons,” he said. “At home children look for information on the computer in a more informal way.”
