US television network NBC’s online educational resource NBC Learn has produced a 16-part video series focusing on the science behind the Winter Olympics. In partnership with the National Science Foundation, the videos are aimed at gaining student interest in the scientific aspects of Olympic sports, such as how Newton’s Three Laws of Motion propel short track speed skaters to the finish line. Each video contains a scientist explaining how a specific scientific principle applies to a sport, with a US athlete describing that principle further in relation to their event. Athletes’ movements for the videos are captured on a high-speed camera called the Phantom Cam, which can capture 1500 frames per second. View them at www.nbclearn.com
