Children from 270,000 poorer families in the UK are to be given free laptops and Internet access, as part of the Government's £300m Home Access Scheme.
A recent UK study by the Institute of Fiscal Studies has determined that access to a laptop can lead to improved grades in one subject. The new free laptop policy aims to help bridge the achievement gap between rich and poor students.
“Families who are most in need cannot be left behind in the digital revolution we're seeing in education,” said Children's Secretary Ed Balls. “We're leading the world with the way we use technology in learning and we've shown our commitment to this by making ICT the backbone of every lesson in the new primary curriculum.”
