A group of students in the UK have been provided with Apple iPhones to test the product's value as an educational tool.
As part of a joint study by Kingston University and the educational technology provider Academia, pupils at Brentford City Learning Centre are asked to test various iPhone applications – including language learning aids and calculators. They will also be asked to make a case for the educational value of paid applications they think could be useful.
"In most schools mobile phones are viewed as distractions and banned from the classroom,” said a spokesperson from Brentford. “But, as technology becomes more integrated into our daily lives, we wanted to understand how it could be used positively in the learning environment.”
